Eligibility
- The competition was open to all UK state secondary schools, sixth form colleges, FE colleges and independent schools.
- Teams of up to four students aged 11-19 years in full time education were eligible to enter the competition.
- The deadline for receiving competition entries was 21st May 2010.
Rules of Entry
Introduction
- 1. The 'Survival Rivals' competition (the 'Competition') is organised and administered by the Wellcome Trust Limited (as Trustee of the Wellcome Trust) (the 'Wellcome Trust') and Ignite Futures Ltd collaboratively (the 'Organisers'). The Competition requires students to enter films or photographs based on the Survival Rivals experiment kits, as detailed below.
- 2. The Competition is open to students aged between 11 and 19 years in full-time education (the 'Entrant') at an educational institution in the United Kingdom including secondary schools, colleges, sixth form colleges and colleges of Further Education.
- 3. These Rules and Conditions (the 'Rules') apply to the Competition and all Entrants unless otherwise stated by the Organisers. Entrants agree to be bound by these rules through their entry to the Competition.
- 4. The Organisers reserve the right to cancel or amend the Competition or these Rules at any time. Entrants will be notified of any change via the Competition website www.survivalrivals.org.
- 5. The Organisers will deal with any disputes or matters regarding the Rules. The Organisers' decision will be final.
- 6. The judging panel (the 'Judges') shall consist of three (3) independent individuals appointed by the Organisers. The Judges’ names will be available upon request following their appointment
- 7. The Judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. The competition will run from 1 January 2010 until the Closing Date for entries - 5.00pm on Friday 21 May 2010. Entries can be submitted at any time up to and including the Closing Date.
Entrants
- 8. The Competition is open to all schools, and it is not a pre-requisite that a kit is used. Experiment details are available to download free online at www.survivalrivals.org for those not wishing to order a kit. No purchase is necessary to enter the Competition.
- 9. Entrants must be aged between 11 and 19 years at the time their entry is submitted, but team members do not have to be the same age. On submission of entries, teams will be asked for their ages, as this may be taken into consideration by the Judges.
- 10. The Competition is not open to students attending Higher Education institutions, or students who have reached their 20th birthday before 21 May 2010.
- 11. The Competition is not open to professional photographers or filmmakers, and schools or colleges cannot engage the services of professional photographers or filmmakers to create work on behalf of their students. 'On behalf of' means anything more than offering free advice. The Competition is not open to relatives of staff at the Wellcome Trust or Ignite Futures Ltd. For those who are special needs Entrants, any assistance provided during the production of their entry must be acknowledged and disclosed to the Organisers on submission of the entry.
- 12. Entries may be submitted by groups of up to four Entrants. Schools and colleges may submit as many entries as they wish, but Entrants can only submit one entry, restricted to either one film or one set of images (not both).
- 13. All necessary permissions must be obtained by the school in writing prior to submission of entries online. This includes permissions from parents, carers or guardians of Entrants under 18 for them to enter the Competition, for their images be used in photographs and films, and for any such images to be used on the Internet. All films and photographs must be legally obtained with permission if appropriate. If photographs or films feature identifiable children under the age of 16 it is the responsibility of the Entrant to gain permission to submit the photographs/ films to the competition from the parents/guardians of the children concerned. The Organisers reserve the right to request written proof of permissions at any time throughout the Competition process.
- 14. Members of the winning team will also need to obtain permissions from parents, carers or guardians to attend the prize trip.
- 15. By entering the Competition, the Entrant agrees (and Entrant’s teachers, school, parents, carers or guardians (if Entrant is under 18) agree) to be bound by the Rules of the Competition and for entries, the names of Entrants and the names of their schools or colleges to be used for publicity and promotional purposes.
- 16. Personal contact details will remain with the Organisers according to the Data Protection Act 1998 and will not be published, broadcast or passed on to any third parties. Only the Organisers will contact Entrants regarding the Competition. The Organisers may wish to maintain contact with winning teams for a period of two (2) years following the Competition Closing Date in relation to opportunities resulting from the Competition.
Competition
- 17. The aim of the Competition is to encourage Entrants to communicate the science behind the Survival Rivals experiment kits as creatively as possible and record their experiments, activities, results and understanding using film or photography. The images and films produced must be suitable for broadcasting via the Internet and in an exhibition by the Wellcome Trust.
- 18. The Competition will be judged on the following criteria:
- the creative imagination evident in the film or images;
- the ability to communicate the science from the experiment(s) to the general public;
- the technical quality of the images or film; and
- the evidence of scientific understanding arising from the Survival Rival experiments.
- 19. The Judges will also take account of:
- the age and experience of the Entrants;
- the extent to which the images or films reflect the Entrants’ own ideas and interpretations; and
- the appropriateness of the form, style and content of the images and films.
- 20. Entries should:
- Be related to any experiment(s) based on one or more of the Survival Rivals kits supplied by the Wellcome Trust which includes 'I'm a Worm, Get Me Out of Here', 'Brine Date', 'The X-Bacteria' and 'A Question of Taste';
- Comprise of no more than 12 photographic images or a film no longer than two (2) minutes and thirty (30) seconds;
- For photographs, be in the following formats: .jpg, .jpeg, .png and .gif , with the maximum file size being 10MB per photograph;
- For films, be in the following formats: .3gp, .3g2, .asf, .avi, .dv, .flv, .mov, .mp4, .mpg, .mpeg and .wmv, with the maximum file size being 75MB.
- Be all the Entrants' own work. This includes music, sound effects, still photographs, backgrounds etc., without incorporating any material that breaches the copyright of other people.
- 21. Entries must be in a digital format and can be submitted online via the Competition website, or via email attachment, or post as detailed on the Competition entry webpage. Please note that proof of postal despatch is not a guarantee or proof of receipt, and entries will not be returned to Entrants.
- 22. Entrants should ensure that they have sufficient time before the Closing Date to verify that their entries have been received. All entries will be acknowledged by email. The Organisers reserve the right not to publish those entries submitted without the required details as stated on the Competition entry webpage.
- 23. Entries will be moderated at the uploading stage. Any entries containing swearing, inappropriate content, or any such subject that may cause offence, will not be published.
- 24. The Organisers reserves the right to withdraw a submitted entry if it is believed to breach copyright or the Competition Rules, or for any other reason as it sees fit.
- 25. Copyright in all images and film submitted for this Competition remains with the respective Entrants. However, each Entrant grants a worldwide, irrevocable, perpetual licence to each of the Organisers, to feature any or all of the submitted images or film in any of their publications, their websites and/or in any promotional material connected to this Competition, with rights to sub-licence.
Prizes
- 26. IMPORTANT: The first prize of a trip to the Galapagos Islands, accompanied by a teacher, a creative practitioner and a scientist will be available only to one (1) group of four (4) students. Accommodation will be provided in the form of a three (3) to five (5) star hotel with either twin/double sharing occupancy, with half board as a minimum. This trip will take place in mid-October 2010, during half-term for approximately 2 weeks, therefore the winning team will need to be available in October 2010. Consent from parents, carers and guardians will be required to attend the trip for those Entrants under 18. Insurance and transport costs will be covered by the Organiser (both in the UK and once at the Galapagos Islands)The Wellcome Trust and Ignite Futures Ltd. will not cover the cost of passports should any Entrant(s) in the winning team need to apply for one for the purposes of this trip. The responsibility for the trip will lie with the tour operators who have been checked by the Organiser to ensure they are reliable.
- 27. Twelve (12) shortlisted teams will receive a runners-up prize.
- 28. Prizes are offered as advertised. The Organisers reserve the right to replace any prize at its discretion and will seek to ensure that a replacement is of equal value. The main prize of a trip to the Galapagos Islands will be arranged by agents of the Organisers and winners will be required to travel in accordance with the arrangements made on their behalf. No cash alternative to the main or other prizes will be offered.
- 29. Shortlisted teams will be notified within two weeks of the Competition Closing Date. Notifications will made be via e-mail.
- 30. Shortlisted teams may be required to prepare a response to a tie-breaker question. The Organisers reserve the right to use or dismiss the tie-breaker question.
- 31. The winning team will be notified following the Judges’ decision. The shortlisted teams and winning team may be required to take part in media interviews before, during and after the prize trip.
- 32. Each of the Organisers, its directors, staff and officers, partners, agents, contractors, their staff and freelance service providers will not be held liable or responsible for any loss, harm or damage arising from activities undertaken or in any way caused by or to groups or individuals who take part in the experiments associated with the Survival Rivals experiment kits or this associated Competition and its prizes.
- 33. The winner’s name(s) may be disclosed to anyone who writes within one month after the Judges' decision, enclosing a stamped addressed envelope, to the Organisers’ contact details set out below.
